It will guide you through various stages of developing original ideas into designs suitable for print. Methods of printing without the need for a press are shown step by step and advice is given for enhancing prints by using a variety of stitching, by hand and machine.

This course aims to :

Consider the potential of manipulated techniques to create form
Use primary sources to develop designs for vessels
Explore material characteristics as they relate to form.
Consider methods of joining units together

It is for students who wish to learn how to develop their own designs to translate into three dimensional fabric vessels.

It is suitable for the beginner and the more advanced student.

During the course designs for three dimensional structures in vessel form will be developed from primary sources using simple drawing methods.

Demonstration will be given on manipulated techniques and samples shown.

Students will prepare samples that will be developed towards the construction of a simple vessel.

Assessment will be by discussion, question and answer, observation of practical work.

By the end of the course students will have an understanding of design considerations for three dimensional structures and will appreciate the value of close observation and recording information from primary sources. they will have a range of samples of tucked, gathered and rolled fabric and will have developed ideas to realize a small vessel or structure.

Please bring:

notebook and pen, drawing pencils and pens, cartridge paper or sketchbook, tissue paper black ink, large
and small brushes, palette and water pot, PVA or pritt stick, masking tape, paper scissors, blue tack .
Design source for inspiration. Look for photos or pictures of vessels that inspire you and try to bring some organic structures such as shells or seed pods, rocks or plants.
2m of calico or cotton sheeting, coloured or undyed. small amount of fine fabrics for contrast such as musl
in, sheers, scrim. Strong thread eg. waxed linen, buttonhole thread.
Sewing machine and threads spare needles, instruction manual and usual sewing kit.

Branch out with Beads

Working by hand, this workshop is for those wishing to consider beads in an imaginative way. Using a wide range of hard and soft materials and a variety of techniques, we will produce unusual beads in terms of scale and structure to create outlandish jewelry or free standing forms.

The workshop will run at Missenden Abbey Summer School from 2nd to 8th August 2009

BUILD – EXTEND – SHAPE
a design workshop for creating three dimensional structures
This experimental design workshop aims to explore three dimensional structures. The potential of repeated elements to create form will be considered, using primary sources as inspiration. Students will explore materials and their characteristics as they relate to developing form. They will design and create a simple structure and take away ideas for further work including interpretation into fabric and thread.

Requirements:-

Please bring a design source – natural forms such as seed pods, flowers, plant forms, shells, stones would be a good choice.

Design –
notebook and pen
drawing pencils, ink and fine brush, pva glue
at least 3 A1 sheets of cartridge paper, card (cereal box)
tissue paper, other types of paper if wished
straws, barbeque sticks or lolly sticks, masking tape, stapler
string, strong thread, simple sewing kit, scissors
fine/medium weight wire and pliers

Advanced textiles and Embroidery Workshop - Taking it Further

This advanced workshop to be held at Missenden Abbey in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, aims to help students develop their creative ability and confidence to follow a personal approach to their textile work, to encourage them to work independently, and to develop an awareness of contemporary and professional practice.

Three weekends are planned, one per term, designed for committed learners, who have either the City & Guilds Certificate and Diploma, higher qualifications or other relevant experience who wish to further develop their own personal creativity within a design led context. Learners will be encouraged to work independantly to explore experimental approaches and contextual issues. They should have an open mind to new ideas and be prepared to participate in discussion and group evaluations.

The dates of the weekends are: 5/7th December 2008, 27/29th March 2009, 12/14th June 2009

PERSONAL STATEMENT - JANET EDMONDS
Elements of change

My vessels express ideas of mind and matter. Nature’s structures and rhythms provide the visual expression of the labyrinth of mental storage systems and layers of experience.

Life relies on information and stored knowledge. Experiences are packaged as parcels of information, divided into compartments and layered over time. Fragments of information are filed away in the recesses of the mind for future reference and action.
An idea may lie dormant, but pops into the mind at intervals, creating a train of thought. Random snippets of information may come together to give fresh meaning to old understanding, effecting change.

Cellular structures, so common in nature, contain, enclose, wrap and protect, whether they are animal, vegetable or mineral. They illustrate the idea of inside and outside surfaces relating to different parts of the filing cabinet – open drawers, closed drawers, filled or empty, organized in clusters.

The contemplative process of wrapping recycled cloth to form the compartments describes thinking, rewinding thoughts and information to create new ideas and paths forward, whilst the gathering of cloth condenses or expands ideas.
